New archaeological discovery: The Swedish mission of the University of Lund, discovered twelve new tombs on Gebel el-Silsileh. More precisely between Edfu and Kom Ombo, where there is a sandstone quarry. The site had been a heavily used quarry since the New Kingdom until the Roman period. In fact, virtually all of Egypt's great temples were built with sandstone from Gebel Silsileh.
These discoveries show that this site was not only a quarry, but also a place of worship. In conclusion, the main god was Sobek, the god of crocodiles who controlled the waters. However, we do not know to whom the temple was dedicated.
In fact we believe it marked the beginning of the East Bank quarries. On the other hand, we hope that more archaeological excavations will allow us to know more later. Deputy Director John Ward has been working at Gebel Silsileh since 2012. They have unearthed cartouches of Amenhotep III and Ramses II, as well as hundreds of inscriptions.
The Gebel Silsileh means the Mountain of the Chain, because of the chain which was stretched there across the Nile. On the other hand, the Nile flows here over a width of less than 400 meters long made up of sandstone cliffs.
On the other hand, graffiti in a cemetery testify to colonization since prehistoric times. However, there is little evidence of the old kingdom, while the field has always been used in careers until now. Exploitation there was intense in the Middle and New Kingdoms.
